When Yves Saint Laurent launched Opium in 1977, it was met with instant controversy. With the illicit undertones of the new perfume’s name, the brand sought to invoke an exotic luxury that was dangerous and forbidden. And it worked – some people felt the perfume was condoning drug use and should be banned. This, of course, didn’t hurt the sales of the languorous, spicy fragrance, which remains a top-selling perfume today.

The Spirit of Arden: Celebrating 100 Years of Education
